Dark circles under eyes is a common beauty problem plaguing women. It lowers her self esteem because it makes her look sick or stressed out all the time. What causes these and why do they appear?

The thinnest and most delicate skin in the body is the skin around the eye that is thinly dotted with oil glands. When this area dries out,  the veins become prominent giving the eye a dark coloring. There are many causes as to why this happens, a few are listed below.

A)  Heredity:

Its all in the gene pool. Look at your parents, if they have it then there is a good chance that you will have them as well. Thinness of the area around the eyes is a hereditary thing. And if you are prone to skin allergies the skin around the eye area will become dark if you constantly rub the eyes.

B)  Lack of Sleep and Fatigue:

Partying into the wee hours of the morning, fatigue, and sinus infection renders the skin pale. With pale skin, veins are more noticeable making the skin under the eyes dark.

C)  Structure of the Bone:

The more deep set the eyes are, the darker the eyes will look.

D)  Too Much Sun Exposure:

If you are too exposed to the sunlight, the pigmentation of your skin increases causing the skin to tan. When this happens to the area under the eyes, the exposed skin darkens.

E)  Medications:

A lot of medicines cause the blood vessels to dilate. Dark circles under eyes will appear due to the thinness of the skin in this area.

F)  Improper Nutrition:

With poor nutrition, the skin will become pale due to the lack of essential nutrients absorbed by the body. Paleness of skin emphasizes the appearance of veins making the skin look dark.

G)  Hormonal Imbalance:

Another cause of having pale skin is hormonal imbalance  at the time of pregnancy, menstruation, or menopause causes pale skin and this leads to appearance of dark circles under eyes.

H)  Age:

Aging is inevitable and as we grow old the skin in the eye area become more dry and wrinkled due to loss of fat and collagen. When this happens the reddish-blue blood vessels under the eyes appear as dark circles.

I)  Lifestyle:

Smoking, drinking alcohol, too much caffeine all contribute to a darker coloration around the eye area.
